An independent family guide to animation. This is not the website of an animation project or studio and is not connected with the former website on this domain; we do not show or distribute cartoons.

Questions

Questions answered

Short standalone answers about how animation works, how to choose cartoons for children and how to make your own cartoon at home. Each answer can be read on its own. Where there are exact facts, they come from the law and verified sources on film history; where a lot depends on the child, the family and the specific film, we say so and do not invent norms or figures.

For many questions about children and cartoons, the honest answer is "watch it yourself and decide together". That is more useful than anyone else's ranking.

On animation technique

Why do still pictures seem to move?

If you show a series of images, each slightly different from the one before, the eye and brain perceive them as continuous movement. This is the basis of old optical toys, of cinema and of all animation.

How many frames are there in one second of a cartoon?

The standard for film projection is 24 frames per second. In animation, though, artists often work "on twos": one drawing stays on screen for two frames in a row. This means less work while the movement stays smooth enough.

How does puppet animation differ from hand-drawn animation?

In hand-drawn animation, each position of the character is drawn anew. In puppet and clay animation, the character is three-dimensional, placed in a set and filmed frame by frame, with its pose changed a little between shots.

Does the computer make a computer-animated film by itself?

No. The computer helps calculate in-between positions, light and shadow, but the characters, movement, acting and editing are still devised and built by people: artists, animators, directors.

What do the 0+, 6+, 12+, 16+ and 18+ labels mean?

These are Russian information product categories under Federal Law No. 436-FZ “On the Protection of Children from Information Harmful to Their Health and Development”, adopted on 29 December 2010 and in force since 1 September 2012. Other countries use their own systems, such as PEGI or national film ratings. The label shows from what age material is allowed, not that it suits a particular child.

If a film is rated 0+, can a child watch it without parents?

The Russian 0+ label means the film contains no information prohibited for children. But loud noises and sad or tense scenes can still appear. It is better to watch together at least the first time and see how your child reacts.

How much cartoon watching is fine per day?

We do not give numerical limits: that is a question for a paediatrician who knows your child. The general principle is simple: the screen should not crowd out sleep, outdoor time, play and conversation, and one short cartoon you talk about together is worth more than several in a row in the background.

My child was scared by a scene. What should I do?

Pause, give them a hug and ask what exactly was frightening. Explain that it is a story invented and drawn by people and that it all comes to an end. You can go back to the film later or choose a different one, and that is fine.

On homemade cartoons

Do I need a special phone to make a cartoon?

No. Any phone with a camera will do. What matters more is that it stays still, the light does not change and shots are taken with a timer or headset button, without touching the screen.

How many shots do I need for a few seconds?

It depends on the playback speed you choose. For a first cartoon, it is easiest to go by what the app shows you when assembling the clip: film a short section, check the speed and decide how many frames the whole scene needs.

From what age can a child film on their own?

Children can model and move figures once they handle modelling clay confidently. Younger children find it easier when an adult is in charge of the phone and the light, and the child is in charge of the characters and the story.

Can we use music from a favourite cartoon?

Better not, especially if the clip will be posted online: music and film clips are protected by copyright. Record your own sounds, hum a tune or play it on an instrument at home.
